.Mathews derived much of the book from ''A Dictionary of American English on Historical Principles'' edited under the direction of Sir William Craigie at the University of Chicago (1934-1944). Its 1911 pages of entries provides an important view of American culture as it evolved from its beginnings to the mid-20th century
